  • Author: Small Potato
  • Description: A 3-column, widget-ready theme.

Author’s note

Digg 3 Columns is an extended version of my Digg-like Wordpress theme (two columns). Instead of releasing a theme with a unique design for today, I’m releasing only an extended version of one of my previous themes, to take a much needed break from designing.

Ever since the beginning of my self-challenge, the quality of my themes is declining. My brain is dehydrating. The creative juice is not there and I’m getting less and less patient with adding details to make my designs look complete. If you compare my day-one theme to day-five, they’re completely different quality wise. The former is fully realized and its details are there. The latter is junk I threw together in several hours before going to sleep.

I don’t want to sacrifice quality just to say that I’ve put out another unique design. After all, I started WPDesigner because I wasn’t satisfied with the quality of free wordpress themes out there. So, see you tomorrow. Hopefully, I’ll get a good night sleep and feel replenished by tomorrow morning.

Just so you’ll know, your theme designs are standing out to me more than the others lately. Yours are great and don’t at all look as if you’re pushing. Very unique and wonderful!

And later on, I plan on selecting a new one for my journal! Thanks for all the hard work. :)

Hi,
I was waiting (or hoping rather) that you’d make the Digg theme into 3 columns. Great design!

I’ll be checking back daily for more of these great themes. If you ever want to try out a Drupal theme, please give me a shout. I’d be glad to pay for your talent.

Thanks

Small Potato:

Brian - thanks, but I’m loving wordpress rightnow.

Hey, I’m mostly a noob, but i’ve got a question: how do i add stuff in the sidebar? (Like Recent Posts and others)

Hey! Great theme! I modified it today and put it on my blog. Check it out. ;)

Also I found one error in file comments.php line 90. You have written cols=”80″ but this is too wide, I correct it to cols=”70″ and it’s just right wight.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks Jan, that’s one of the fixes that I’ll include in the next version of this theme.

I fixed up this theme so that both sidebars are registered. It only requires a couple changes. When you call the register_sidebar() function, change it to sidebars(2). Then when you call dynamic_sidebar(), insert the argument of “1″ or “2″ to specify which sidebar you are talking about. You also have to modify obar.php so that it calls dynamic_sidebar() like sidebar.php does. I put the default text that you hardcoded into the theme inside the “if” loop so it will show up if the sidebar plugin is not loaded.

Once I made those little changes, I was able to configure widgets on both the right and the left sidebars. Very spiffy.

I also hacked up a sidebar widget to go with adsense deluxe so I can configure the placement and specify the adsense block to use in the sidebar. You can see a skyscraper block in my left sidebar now.

Small Potato:

Thanks Weldon, I found out how to widgetize multiple sidebars while working on themes published after Digg 3 Columns.

I finally went back to fix Digg 3 today and updated it right around the time you posted your comment :).

I started using Digg 3 Columns on my weblog tonight, and just wanted to drop by to say thanks. It’s terrific.

One small problem, though (wouldn’t you know?)…

I cannot get “Next Page” and “Previous Page” to appear at the bottom of my pages. I don’t think this is a problem with your theme, since I’ve had this problem since I upgraded to Wordpress 2.1. I just wondered if maybe you would be able to shed some light.

Thanks!

Small Potato:

Hi Len. If you’ve made any modification to this theme at all, please send me the modified version. I’ll poke around to see what the problem is.

The only modification I made was in the css file… I changed the page title from uppercase to lowercase. Other than that, everything is straight out of the box.

Weird, huh?

Small Potato:

Yup. Other people are having the same problem, but mostly it’s because they use query_post() on the front page.

Whenever you use query_post, posts_nav_link doesn’t work.

Hey!

It’s working now. I just deactivated several plug-ins, and it started working. I don’t really know which plug-in was the culprit. I reckon I could find out by going back and reactivating them one by one, but the better half is screaming for me to go to the grocery, so can’t right now.

Anyway… wanted to let you know… problem solved!

Small Potato:

After grocery shopping, check the wordpress 2.1 plugin compatibility page. It’ll save you some time.

Love your work. The input box for comments is too wide though. It crosses into the sidebar.

I tried changing it in comments.php from cols=”60″ but nothing worked. Is there something in the stylesheet that needs adjusting?

I was able to fix the width of the comments box by adding this to the stylesheet:

#commentform textarea {
width: 400px;
}

Small Potato:

Michael - the latest version of this theme by default has only 60 cols for textarea. I thought 70 cols and down would do. Weird.

Other than limiting the width of textarea, you can also change the font size for textarea only.

I finally use this Digg 3 Columns to my web blog. I use Wordpress 2.1. Thank for this nice theme.

Small Potato:

Nice custom banner and adsense integration. Thanks for using my theme!

How do I integrate a custom header with this theme, or can I?

Thanks,

Chris Vadnais

http://www.jacknupple.com

Okay so apparently I suck. I fixed my header and I’m now sorry I asked without fully trying to figure it out myself.

Now I’m getting errors when attempting to post comments:

(error messages edited out by Small Potato. reason: non-theme related problem… and it was too long, which caused a horizontal scrollbar)

The comments get posted, but the viewer is left with this error page. What am I doing wrong?!

Thanks

Dang it! Answered my own question it again.

The “subscribe to new comments” plugin was creating the error.

Thanks for the theme; it’s awesome.

Small Potato:

So everything’s fine now? Sorry I didn’t respond earlier, had a lot of things to do yesterday.

How can I change the amount of space between the categories on the lefthand side? As it stand it takes up too much room, but I’m too inexperienced to figure out how to change it.
thanks!

Small Potato:

You mean the spacing in between each block?

The spacing between the actually links to the categories themselves:

Catergories:

whoops, lost part of my post, but i think you get what i’m saying.

Small Potato:

Stephen, open the style.css file and find “sidebar ul ul li,” then see if “line-height” is within that section. If it is, chane the line-height value to a higher number.

hmm, there’s no line-height section under “sidebar ul ul li”
Any other ideas?

Small Potato:

Ok. Then, within the same block, find padding: 6px 0 3px. Change the number 6 to 10 or something. 10 might be too far apart, but try it.

If you have any other questions, please post it at http://www.wpdesigner.com/forums/

On there, I’ll be able to keep track of your questions and customs.

no more questions, that fixed it. thanks man!

Small Potato:

Hi!
is it normal that with ie 6 i see this and a lot of other 3 columns themes(all??) in a very bad way??

Small Potato:

Andrea,

Normally, my themes don’t break when viewed with IE6. It depends on what you have in your blog posts.

Big photos that expand beyond the width of the middle column is usually the problem.

andrea:

when i open your website with internet explorer 6 i see this :

http://www.unbuconellalcool.com/wpdesigner.jpg

(right column falls at the end of the page after the content of central column)

Thanks

Small Potato:

That’s because the images used in my tutorials series are too big. What you’re looking at is the demo of Digg 3 with my blog’s content (including the big images).

The two doesn’t match. IE6 therefore pushes the right sidebar down.

When you use this theme for your blog. Make sure your images fit within the middle column.

andrea:

can you visit my site?
http://www.unbuconellalcool.com/

As you can see i do not have any images but i still have problems with ie.

Can you help me?

Small Potato:

I have IE6 and it doesn’t push your right sidebar down.

But, for one thing, the size of the drop down archive list is too big.

Although you have no errors, I don’t know if the customizations you’ve made to the middle column affect the layout or not.

If you want me to answer other support questions, please post it here:
http://www.wpdesigner.com/forums

Thanks Andrea

andrea:

Hi Small Potato-

I’m sorry about not having the link there. I wasn’t aware of the CC rule so I’ll put one in…no problem at all. :-)

Hi again. I don’t appear to be the only one without a link back to your site. I was clicking on some other sites above so I could find the exact link code but couldn’t find it. I just wanted to bring it to your attention Small Potato.

Thanks,

David

Thanks David. There are thousands of bloggers using my themes. I can’t check one by one, only the ones that were brought to my attention.

Ok David. To be fair, I took the time to contact the commenters above you, using this theme without linking back.

@andrea - Please restore the link to wpdesigner.com in your sidebar. Thank you.

Thanks for the great looking theme. I’m using it, with a few slight modifications, on my website, http://www.andreasrecipes.com. And of course you’ve got credit in the footer and a link back.

It’s not hard, but you’d have to be familiar with CSS. This type of modification is not for new theme users.

hey small potatoe. i love your theme. but, i am having trouble figuring out why i cant drop a widget from my sidebar back into my available widgets. any thoughts?

You can’t drag and drop it or just can’t remove from it from your sidebar (after saving)?

sepurb:

hi! i can drag from the “available widgets” and drop into either sidebar. however once they have been dropped in the sidebar, i cannot remove them.

I’ve never heard of something like that before. Maybe you need to drag them back further to remove them.

Drag them down to the same line as the inactive widgets. Other than that, I don’t know what to suggest. I’m pretty sure it’s not a theme problem.

sepurb:

you know what, it started working a half hour ago. very strange when these things “fix” themselves.

Hi –

I’m a noob, and I’m using this theme for my blog, Nuts about Needlepoint (http://www.nuts-about-needlepoint.com). I’d like to make some changes and haven’t got a clue how to do this.

I’d like to:
change the title from all upper to upper and lower case (and change the font as well)
change the color of the tabs at the top and maybe add some (I’m not sure about that part)
change the color of the background behind the title and the box it’s in
maybe (if I feel comfortable enough) change the box behind the title to an image of mine

Thanks heaps for all your help!

HI, I put a custom banner at the top of my Digg3 blog and removed the web site title under the options section of WP so the name would not show on top of my banner. The problem is that my blog is now being catalogued by the url and not the title. Instead of Market Research Briefing it says http://mrbriefing.com.

How do I work around this. Thanks!

You could’ve simply remove the title area in the header.php file.

Thanks, Small Potato. All I did was remove everything between the title tags and type in my blog name, save, and it works just fine. Now when Technorati and others list my blog it will have the name and not the url.

I’m using the DIGG3 theme as well. I love that it has the built in Flickr widget; however, when I plug in my RSS the pics don’t change. I want MY pics to show, not some random folks. Please, anyone, help. :)

http://tamaraeden.wordpress.com

Tamara - You’re using a different version of Digg 3. I have no control over the one on WordPress.com.

Jane:

Hey SP! You do great work. Is it possible for me to change one file and have a different gray in the background, or a picture where the blue is? Or a different color there? Also, if I download your version I can have widgets on both sides? COOL BEANS!

Jane:

Wow now this is freaking beautiful — > http://mrbriefing.com

I like the color you have up top, so apparently it can be changed.
I want a lighter pinstripe gray in the background.

I have been using Kubrick but for some reason cannot figure out how to get rid of the plain area around the main area so my stripes won’t look weird, such as here:

http://www.atkinsontaxpayers.org/atkinson

This DIGG theme is one step up and if I can customize header color and background, it would be the one I would move to for all my sites.

Yup, this version has widgets on both sides. The gray background is an image. You’d have to remove that image and use and background color or edit that image to change the background.

Jane:

Ok thanks, I’ll dig around for the blue image replacement too, assuming it’s the same deal.

Ok, thanks for replying, perhaps I’ll switch themes :( which sucks cuz this one lookks nice. But, I want my flickr badge

Thanks again

thanks for your efford

Thanks for this nice looking theme. I have been tweaking it quite a lot - have a look at http://www.prepressure.com/

I upgraded to Wordpress 2.3.1 earlier this week - the theme seems to be fully compatible which was a great relief. You should get it added to the list of compatible themes on the Wordpress.org site!

Thanks again for making this theme available.

i love this theme! i have 1 challenge : i love the top left hand side tabs but it seems like i cant add on more tabs by creating more pages?

Adding items to the top Menu:
- The top menu features two links: Home and About
- To add more links, use a text editor (i.e: Notepad) to open the header.php file and copy and paste:
<a href=”" title=”">
- Remember to edit your link title and the destination of your link within href=” “.

I dont get this

Jane:

OK in addition to adding links to the top, what happens with the calendar? Is it just there or do I have to add it? I have trouble with this now that the widgets are added they won’t let me remove links in the sidebar include on the plain Kubrick model.

Resolved!
Tks Small Potato

Jane:

Don’t know where this went…it’s gone!

http://mrbriefing.com

@Jane - Use the calendar widget if you want a calendar.

Jane:

Yes I know but when I went to edit the sidebar (on the one I showed you) I could not remove the usual 2 or 3 links from it manually — they just stayed there.
The widget only lets me rename ‘meta’ to ‘admin’ or something I can undersand.

I usually just leave the login/logout button there.

Nice theme!!

Thanks for the neat looking well laid out theme.
I want the trackback url to be shown as a hyperlink along with comments.
How can i get this? Any suggestions.

You can look up on WordPress.org for the function to call for the trackback url. Then, add that function to the single.php file.

While looking at the source code of pages on my site, I noticed that the actual page content is way down in the code. It is preceded by all of the ’support content’ from the 2 sidebars. Doesn’t this make the theme SEO-unfriendly? Is there an easy way to change the structure of the lay-out so that the middle column gets listed first in the source code?

SEO-wise, it is a bad theme. You can look into the Sandbox theme for ideas of how to restructure your own copy of Digg 3 Columns.

Great theme, i like this style.

This theme is good but not so colorful. I used this theme in past. Now, I am using another theme designed by Small Potato.

Thank you for an awesome theme… crisp, fresh, clean… the way I like it.

Just one question: Can the header image be replaced, or am I restricted to your bg_header.gif and bg_header_alt.gif files

You simply replace it by naming the new image bg_header or bg_header_alt

If you want to change it to a .jpg file, rather than .gif, then change the image’s suffix in the style.css file where bg_header.gif or bg_header_alt.gif is referenced.

I am having a problem with the combination of Digg 3 and the WP-PostRatings 1.20 Plugin for WP.

Here is my issue….

I have installed the latest version on WP-PostRatings….1.20. I need a little pointer if anyone knows where I can fix the Loading… issue. It seems like there are two different templates being used depending on how the WP page is viewed. i.e.

- If you go into WP using a CAT= parameter then the page gets handled differently and the STATIC values are inserted into the page e.g. “Loading..” is now a static text value….instead of the SCRIPT being inserted into the page as normally happens wit PostRatings. This is why the Loading never goes away I think. Example http://belfair.axio.com/?cat=6

So, if you enter WP with a single post then it resolves correctly as far as PostRatings is concerned. Example http://belfair.axio.com/?p=4

This is not a problem with the “VANILLA” WP themes because they seem to always fully resolve the whole page as in the second example above. Other more elegant themes take a different approach when displaying a category in that they are truncated and a […] is put on the end as in my case.

I am using DIGG 3 Column from WPDESIGNER site….SO that is what I have found so far.

If anyone could point me to the right code to fix/patch that would be most appreciated.

If your category template is displaying excerpts only then change the_excerpt to the_content. You can find it in the category.php file or archive.php file.

Ernesto:

Hi! I’ll use the Theme Digg 3 Column, in an spanish blog (I hope my English is stiil good :P ), in Wordpress.com, until I get my server set up.
I find that there are a few spots where it seems not to be translated, there are:
In the header, Button Search and the link “Comments RSS”
The area of comments, everything is in English (”Leave a Replay”, “Submit Comment” button and “logged as”
Thanks a lot for the dessings!

Sorry, there’s nothing I can help you with when you’re hosted on WordPress.com. Note: Getting your own server and hosting means you’ll be using a version of Digg 3 that is different from the one on WordPress.com.

Just want to say thanks for a great design . . .

From the ones available from wordpress, I’ve found yours the best that serves my purposes todate.

There are a few things I’d like to do with it, but I do know I’ll have to wait until it goes on a private server/host etc . . all in good time . . . $$$

One thing I’d like to do is widen the width of the right hand column from the standard size to something wider . . ? is that possible while it’s still on wordpress.com ??

Please check it out, and any feedback would be most welcomed. The header is just a temp one, as I have a “real” designer making something much much nicer . . I simply was playing around with a free logo generator and made this, I tried to match the green colour that you have used on the Tabs etc and throughout the site . . . . and this was as close as I could get on their colour choices.

I like the way I can play with it, and include various items, as for someone with NO html or coding background, this is heaven . . . Please don’t think your designs are average, they aren’t . . .

What are the differences in the wordpress.org Digg 3 compared to the Digg 3 wordpress.com by the way . . . ??

Cheers . . .

The .org version is harder to customize for novice users. No banner switcher for example.

This theme is a fixed-width theme that depends on background images to pull off its… look. Stretching a column could mean having to stretch the related background images and shortening the background images of other columns that your customization affects.

To do it cleanly on Wordpress.com? No. As for the logo or new banner… I’m thinking… not enough contrast?

Thanks for the info, most appreciated

Yes, I agree about the header at the moment, have something else to go up today . . but have a good graphics friend making me a really good one - thankfully . . .

Do you have any ideas as to a them that would be variable width and that would suit, do you have one ?

The blog is getting support and a small following now, but it’s not enough yet to take it off wordpress.com . . well not for me anyway . . .

I’ve found Digg 3 one of the best and easiest to use from the wordpress themes . . . so keep up the great work . . .

Hi, I am using your themes. And now, suddenly I have problem with my layout. Would you, please cheek my blog.

would be really much better if you could make it adsense ready as well
thanks

Agus:

Hi

Thank you for your free template, I’m using it in my weblog.
I’m new to blog, I hope you wouldn’t mine if I make some changes.
Again thank you

Can you point me in the right direction…look at my Discussion Forums (right column link) …. I am running XDFORUMS. The graphic for next to the topics is a transparent gif and works fine in anything else I do but in DIGG-3 it seems to have a border or whitespace around. If I just put it in its own table or run in the standard WP theme…it works fine…so I’m thinking its somewhere in the theme or the CSS. Thoughts? Thanks…love the theme by the way.

Search for img and background: #fff ?

very nice theme. I like it

Vaska:

Hi,

An excellent design–thank you!

I’m new to Wordpress and PHP.

I’m looking for assistance with the following:

When viewing individual posting pages I see the links, which I’ve inserted as part of the body text. But when viewing the same postings under a Category page, the links are not included in the posting.

I notice for example that the default WP theme does display the links in a Category page. Could anyone point me in the right direction as to what file(s) I should be modifying or better yet any snip bits of code to modify?

in category.php or archive.php, replace the_excerpt with the_content. for future questions, please post them at the support forums. thanks vaska.

Jane:

I absolutely LOVE this theme, but I have a very strange problem — all of a sudden this post won’t let the links be ‘hot’.

What the heck is wrong? I had to put them in like text for now… links will work in all other places, it’s just too weird.

Jane - go to archive.php or category.php and change the_excerpt to the_content

Hi there,

This is an excellent theme. We looked high and low and chose this one out of many. Thank you for all your hard work.

We are presently hosting WP on our own server (Windows) and things are working fine.

For some reason, the navigation tabs are not working properly. “Home” works okay, but “About” does not. Also the tabs do not automatically update with a new page.

We have a test site on wordpress.com: http://sigmaxi.wordpress.com/

If you look on the wordpress.com site, you will see that About and Contact work fine, and these represent the top pages.

Our site should also have these, but it doesn’t. The file is header.php. The code is in the “menu” div:

<a href=”/” title=”">
<a href=”" title=”">

In the wordpress.com site, the corresponding code (page source) is:

Home
About
Contact

So I am not sure exactly what’s going on. If you have any clues, that would be great, and much appreciated.

Roger - The wordpress.com version is different. For working with tabs while hosting on your own server, look in this theme’s readme.txt file.

OK. It looks like the link has to be written into header.php manually then?

That’s no problem.

FYI, another theme I worked on called Field of Dreams automatically puts a tab on the header for each new page, and has options where you can select which page actually shows up on the tabbed navigation.

Jane:

I decided not to make extra tabs at the top, but now the only question I have is, how to limite page lengths and when quoting, why does the nice little ” only show up at the beginning?

See here:

http://www.ronpaulhive.com

Jane:

I figured it out — in preview mode the links don’t show but I will try this:

Jane - go to archive.php or category.php and change the_excerpt to the_content

In the yellow quotes, there is a nice tan ” but not at the end. OH well nothing is perfect, but this helped me get this site up fast…

Thank you SP - you’re a genius. :-)

Jane:

Yep it works, archive.php has one place to change it… I have no clue what I am doing, but it’s working. :-)

I love Digg 3 but am having a problem. If you visit my URL, you’ll see that the pages are listing on the left, but the pages are not appearing on the top. I’m using Wordpress.org and the pages on the top appear perfectly fine on my Wordpress.com blog (mylifemantra.wordpress.com)

Can you please help?

Thanks!

Please read the readme.txt file for tabs instructions.

Great stuff you do. Thanks! I’m new to Wordpress - I’m transferring a blog from Yahoo 360 (I think “360″ has to do with the number of reasons it blows) and I discovered your great themes. They look great…one problem though…my older posts are abbreviated with the (…) symbol at the end, however, the dots are not linked to the rest of the post. I would expect a click on these dots would open the whole post, right? I haven’t meddled with your theme at all. Any ideas?

I’m going to play around with some of your other themes. Thanks.

Hi,

I’m having the same problem as Sepurb (#71;) I can’t put widgets back into the Available Widgets box.

Any suggestions, in case it doesn’t fix itself like it did for Sepurb?

Thanks!

LoCoLoca - It seems like a WordPress problem, not a theme problem.

cuzzy:

hi there I am sure this is listed already but the number of posts here are high.

I am dealing with the header.php.

How do I get rid of the title of my blog in the header image?

I believe you have to type not to display somewhere?

I am having fun teaching myself all this stuff.

thanks all.

look for bloginfo(’name’) in the header file and remove it or you could leave your blog’s title blank
