Author’s note

Total Liquidation is my first liquid/fluid width theme. Rather than just challenge myself creatively, I also want to learn more about creating fluid designs. That’s the area that I’m really lacking so I decided to try one today. This theme is image-less and very, very simple because I was afraid that I would get frustrated and give up if I had to convert a graphic-dependent design into a fluid theme.

Total Liquidation isn’t much, but it might come in handy if you ever want a basic fluid theme to start off with.

Looks great. I personally don’t really like that color scheme (reminds me of a bee… which I’m not too fond of…) but that’s easily modifiable. It’s definitely fluid, and it’s nice that everything’s easy to read.

While we’re on the subject of themes, one thing I’ve always wondered about the theme for WPD is, why don’t you have a header? Seems like even a small header goes a long way in getting visitors to remember your site. Just a thought. :)

I’m not really feeling this theme.. I think what’s lacking that would be perfect, is having some entry design to it. Kind of more focus on the entries then anything else.

It ends up all flowing together and there’s really nothing there to differentiate. Otherwise I like the simplicity of it, and the color scheme.

Keep it up =)

I love your themes! Awesome work. You should consider making a four column theme; header and footer…with left side bar and right side bar. And then the two center columns deliver the posts. I think this would be quite challenging but very unique!

Small Potato:

Dean - I’m redesigning WPD.

Jordan - I’ll try a better looking fluid theme with a distinct content column next time.

Bryan - like news columns type of layout huh? That sounds interesting, but I don’t know how to do it.

The only way that I can think of is setting the post display number to five and calling for another five posts for the second main column, but that requires any blog using the theme to already have at least 10 posts.

Otherwise, bloggers with brand new installed blogs would get errors.

Bryan:

Yeah, like newspaper columns, exactly. The NYTimes.com website reminds of me of that.

What about using multiple loops? But then I don’t know how you could define in the control panel which posts would go in which column.

Bryan:

Makes me think… it’d be like making each category it’s own widget. So you could place a category of posts any where you wanted on the page.

Small Potato:

I would do if(have_post()) for the first column and query_post() or get_post() for the second main column. I forget which function it is that you can use to call up posts.

I don’t know… it’s an interesting concept, which I think have been done before, at least half-way. You can check out the Hemingway WordPress theme for what I’m talking about.

The Hemingway theme displays its front page posts side by side. However, there are only two posts displayed.
