Author’s note
I mentioned earlier that I’m now working on multiple themes per day, ever since I started freelancing (doing custom/paid themes) again. Basic Concept is the perfect example of my process for a paid theme. Usually, this is what I send to a client to get their feedback on the layout, placement, and flow of the design. It’s black, gray, and white with no details because I want them to judge only the layout, placement, and flow.
Actually, Basic Concept was exactly what I sent for one of my current projects, but the client turned it down. I came up with a better one and used this for a free theme.

SP,
Great stuff, SP. Thanks for releasing this one.
Thanks Ronald, be sure to remind of the theme contest. I tend to be forgetful.
SP,
I can be forgetful, too. Your themes have already won me over, so I don’t think there will be a contest for now. In fact, I just relaunched a podcast using this theme. It’s awesome.
Thanks for your hard work — you will be rewarded.
That’s great news! I’m glad I made the header imageless.
Hey Potata…
Your creative output is very inspiring!
I’m using this theme of yours right now and I really appreciate the clarity of design and how simple it is to modify when necessary.
I just wanted to say Thank You. *hug*
Looks like it fits perfectly with your banner and styles
After looking way too many themes, the simplicity of Basic Concept hit us like a hammer. It’s easy to read and is completely uncluttered yet not so much that it looks like just plain text. Nice job, we’re running it for now and hope to do some mods with it later, maybe splitting up the sidebar into two columns. Thanks.
buzzdroid,
In IE6, the sidebar gets pushed to the bottom. You need to fix the size of mybloglog. Other than that, looks good :).
Thanks for pointing that out, to be honest, we’ve practically given up on IE6. We have to fire up old machines to use to test it and amazingly, less than 15% of our visitors use it!
I am working through the tutorials but I don’t see anything about modifying the header. I’d like to replace the plain black header with a header my client already uses. I can’t figure out how to do that. Where is the code located that I need to change?
It’s in the style.css under #header.
Oh dear - I cannot make it work. Here’s what I did:
#header{
background: url(”/images/thearticleguy_header_JPG.jpg”);
clear: both;
float: left;
width: 100%;
padding: 30px 0 20px 0;
}
That is the correct file name and location.
Is this code going to show up in this comment?
Remove the quotes
I removed the quotes, checked to make SURE the file was there (it is) and it still doesn’t work. I’m frustrated with myself.
Is the ‘JPG’ part of the file’s name? the file already ends in jpg
also, try removing the forward slash in front of ‘images’
That did it!! Thank you so much.
Also - don’t ask my why but jpg IS part of the file name. I didn’t create it - his graphics person did.
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your help. This is a great theme - just what he’s looking for but with his own header.
I am loving your tutorial! You really need to make it into a product and sell it!
I’m currently modifying your template. It works really great but i can’t get a date below my post, could you please help me? Thanks in advance!
i like theme very much.but i have a question:how can i remove the sidebar from the single post page or not remove just customize it myself?
Look for the function that calls for the date within the postinfo area. Move it to below the title.
@kar - That’s a little more complicated. Please post it at the forums.
yes,i think so.
i have already posted it at the forums.
thank you very much!
@Small Potato: I’ve already looked at the single.php file for the function that calls the date but there isn’t one, so I can’t move it. Could you please tell me wher i can find the date function?
Jeroen,
Thank you for spotting this. Turns out, I DIDN’T add the_time function to this theme.
What you need is:
I have a sidebar issue between IE and FireFox. In FireFox the author info and search box display perfectly. They don’t show up at all in IE. I have not modified them, just changed their position in the sidebar. Can you help with this issue?
I tried your suggestions for including the date including the time function, but it is still not displaying.
wow this theme looks great, going over your tutorial to become just as good hopefully, good luck with your multiple templates a day
while i work on my one template a month lol
My client would like the comments to be numbered. All I see everywhere I look is OL’s, which means numbered, right? How do I make the comments numbered?
Thanks…Cathy
in the comments-template area of the style.css file. remove list-style-type: none or list-style: none
Thank you! And I thought I was so smart looking for a place to add OL!
One more thing I can’t seem to understand. In the header, the pages list across. I don’t want the pages but would like to put links there. If I remove the get_pages code, the header and posts disappear and the right sidebar goes to the left. How an I change that to show links?
Thanks…Cathy
then use LI and A tags only, no wp_list_pages()
Thank you - once again. Of course, that worked perfectly. I do have a question and it isn’t meant to be sarcastic. It’s the only way I could think to word it. How or why should I have known to use LI tags. There is something I’m not understanding. Is it experience? I would never have thought to experiment with LI tags.
Without know what the UL tag was and that wp_list_pages() generates LI tags, you couldn’t have figured it out… I think. You need to learn more about XHTML and WordPress template fuctions.
OH - so LI tags were there, just not visible with the wp_list_pages function. Yes - I need to know a lot more about wp functions. I’m off to ‘docs’ to find out more.
Thank you again…Cathy

Is it possible to replace the sidebar from the left to the right? and is this theme widget ready? Thanks in advance!
It’s widget ready. To switch sidebar position, call for the sidebar before the main content appears.
Which file need to be modified? I looked trought all the php files for a php statement that include the sidebar.php file but i can’t find it.
Jeroen, it’s in the footer.php file. The very firs line calls for the sidebar. Move that code to the header.php file. Pleace it at the bottom of the header.
Now, go in the style.css file and modify the margin setting for the sidebar.
Thank you very much, it’s done. I don’t expext to find the sidebar into the footer.
this theme ist the best theme ever. i am using it for my blog. great work, thank you.
the only thing is, since the wordpress 2.2.2 update, the widgets are not working anymore. i can’t drag an drop them (on safari, firefox and camino). do you have any idea how to fix this issue?
Nope, you should be able to use them just find. Do you still have the widget plugin installed? Remove it.
thanks for your quick answer.
no, i don’t have the wiidget plugin since wordpress put an “original” widget.php inside. somehow, something is not ok. :).
i try to get a solution.
thanks anyway.
You shouldn’t install the widget plugin since WordPress comes with it now… was what I meant to say.
i meant the same…. (my english is so bad).

SP,
Basic concept has proven to be exactly what I needed - simple and clear. But as I develop my blog (the blogus groundhogus) I find a need to hybridize the blog with a forum. What would be ideal is the ability to follow threads in the blog responses. I would love to be able to respond to a response right below wherever that response takes place — and for others to continue that conversation within the same, say, indent. So, is this possible? Know any plugins which would allow this? I’m new to this world and if you have a better suggestion for me I’d be proud to hear it.
THanks mucho.
Danny
Danny - I think the Brian’s Threaded Comment Plugin is what you’re looking for.
SP,
Muchas gracias! works like a charm. EXCEPT for a small graphical issue: on a PC using internet explorer the sidebar disappears from the right and becomes part of a single column, appearing below the comments. This is not true on a mac or on other PC browsers I tried. Is there a fix to this?
There are several fixes, but it depends on what’s causing it. You need to track down the cause first then search for Containing Floats Tutorials.
…oh, and while I’ve got you here:
Can you recommend a plugin to notify people of a new blog post?
I saw a few to choose from, but each came with warnings of technical problems.
You’re a pal. (May I call you “S”?)
Uhhh. Why do you need a plugin? Tell them to subscribe to your RSS feed. If you want it by email, sign up to Feedburner Email Subscription service. As for plugin recommendation, I have no clue, never messed with that type of plugin before.
Sure, you can call me S, but most readers call me SP so you might feel left out
If you need anymore theme-related help, please use the Wpdesigner support forums.
I’m using it on one of my sites: http://www.PowerPointPortugal
I’m just posting here in case if you made a new update to the theme. Hehe.
Thanks,
Rui

I’ve installed this beautiful theme but the next and previous page links don’t work. I’ve setup the homepage to show only two posts.
