What is your WordPress theme wish list?

Let me start out with my own wish list.

  1. Circular navigation and the option to turn it on and off - I wouldn’t know where to even begin with this. It would be unbelievable if the WordPress team could tack this on for the future. Here’s my example of a circular menu (created in Photoshop):

    circular_menu.gif

  2. Dynamic sidebars - You’re already moving sidebar widgets up and down, back and forth. Why not apply that feature to the actual sidebar content? Allow users to rearrange sidebar content, not just from the Sidebar Widgets page. Check out the iTheme by NDesign Studio for an example.
  3. New SEO-friendly structure - Although Google loves blogs and not many bloggers actually care about SEO (search engine optimization), it would be nice to go to sleep knowing that your blog’s theme is SEOed. For one thing, WordPress uses H2 for sidebar titles, when it should be using H3 or no heading tags at all. Sure, you can change this by using a
    functions.php

file and tell it to adjust the tags before and after sidebars titles, but it’s a pain if you have to do that with every theme.

That’s all I can think of for now. Do you have a WordPress theme wish list?

i have always wanted an Ajax-based commenting. I hope you can make an article one how to do it sometime. :)

Hi Gio,

I just made a post about Ajax commenting.

thank you. i will definitely read that one..

When the guys over at WP asked this same question before they released 2.0, I posted the following. I’m still waiting to find something like this too :)
“One of my sites is where I post links to free stuff you can find on the internet. I would kill for a way, feature, plugin, etc that will allow me to post not just one country flag with an individual post, but multiple country flags if the situation calls for it.

Some freebies are limited to only one country, such as US only or UK only, etc. But some freebies are US AND Canadian or Australian AND NZ only. So naturally on some posts I’d just want an American flag but on other posts I’d want an American flag plus others.

I guess what I’m wanting is the ability to add check-able custom options on the Write Post page, where I could have a list of countries and check the ones whose flags I’d want to appear. And it wouldn’t have to be just flags, it could be whatever images or quotes or whatever you wanted to be on the checklist.”

The only way I’ve been able to do this so far is to use the Custom Field’s option, which is a bit time consuming and hard to implement with some themes.

I know a tutorial to make circular menus with CSS. It’s in Spanish, but you might find it easy to follow. I link to the explanation of the code:

And here’s the example:

I’ve been looking for that tutorial. Thanks!

To make it less complicated, why not just make a simple image map? Though, that would be cool to implement.

Sorry, mis your comment there…css does wonders don’t it?:)

Hmm. I kinda like Wordpress without widgety goodness. But thats’ just me. A purist slow adopter.

It would be unbelievable if the WordPress team could tack this on for the future.

but all of the things in your wishlist are achievable right now by a wordpress theme. isnt it ? so what do you expect from the wordpress team to provide ?

It’s all possible, especially SEO, by fixes. However, is the wordpress team going to fix the SEO problem permanently? I want to know because I don’t want to fix the sidebar SEO stuff only to go back later to remove the fixes due to new versions of WordPress that come with SEO by default.

Second, I wouldn’t even know where to start with the circular menu. I’m just curious about it. It would be nice to have it as a menu or plugin option.

Hey!

I’m the author of the circular menu tutorial that was posted above. I just read your comments and found pretty exciting the idea of making it a plugin or a widget… I’m thinking of a highly customizable script, to be able to adapt it to your needs (select the number of links, urls, hover, active, visited and normal image uploads, etc.).

Not sure if I’ll be able to do it, but I’ll give it a shot and keep you updated.

That sounds great! I’d love to try it out. Let me know if you need help testing it.
