Wpdesigner.com’s Looking for Dedicated Hosting
It’s time to move to another host again. Although Wpdesigner is averaging only 1500 uniques per day, every time this blog increase in traffic, it grows by 30% to 50%. In a short period of time, surely, I’ll have my hands full with this blog. Other than speed and stability for Wpdesigner’s traffic, I’ll also need the flexibility of reseller hosting to manage smaller projects. Therefore, I’m looking for the following requirements:
- Intel P4 2.8 GHz
- 1024 DDR RAM
- 80GB Hard Drive
- 1500GB Bandwidth
- 100Mbps Port
- 3 IPs and up
- CPanel/WHM
- Fantastico
- WordPress
Unlike most web host clients, I’ll actually use most of the resources. And given that this blog is powered by WordPress, it’ll probably use quite a bit of SQL and CPU resources. Other than the requirements above, I need a host that will allow me some room to grow (lots of upgrade options and low overage fees). Wpdesigner is going to be a very high traffic blog. I’m looking to move to a new host and stay permanently. My budget is around $100/month. I’m also open to sponsorship deals.
I need your help. Please let me know if you have any good dedicated host to suggest.
P.S. - I paid for dedicated hosting yesterday and have been unhappy with this one particular host. To think, my server is not even up yet. How can I trust them enough to host with them in the long run? Right now, I’m requesting for a refund and still looking for a host to move to.

I have worked with powervps before. They are the best on the net right now.
Well i’ve been on a couple of hosts, so here’s my recomendations:
http://www.spry.com
http://cari.net/
http://survivetraffic.com/
@Robert - I checked PowerVPS and researched them a bit. They sound like a reliable host. But, I’m adding more files for downloads almost every other day. Wpdesigner will eat up bandwidth very quickly and their VPS plan can’t cater that. I also checked out their dedicated department, but it’s down right now.
@Moses - I actually checked out cari.net several days ago. Very nice offers, however, they don’t offer Cpanel. I have experience with Plesk. I don’t know how Plesk’s interface and structure is like now, but my experience with Plesk was a hassle.
Spry.com has an attractive starter package for dedicate hosting, but their upgrades are not logical. The next step after the starter package is actually doubled the price.
SurviveTraffic.com looks very promising and I came across them before. I’ll look up more info about this host. Thanks Moses.
hmmm try http://o2g.net/ they have a good deal and maybe they were what you are looking for….
Thanks Scart, but I’m not looking for shared hosting.
You may check theplanet.com
I know they host very large projects working fine, and the prices for a machine like the one you are looking for are cheaps.
I would tip you off with http://www.mosso.com/
Try using Direct Admin it consume very less ram .and install lite speed instead of apache it will help you lot .
check out medialayer review in wht. you will get some idea
I recommend ServerBeach. They’re a spinoff of RackSpace. Prices are decent and support is fantastic when you need it.
I’ve worked with the Planet with 2 servers at work and don’t recommend them. EVS was good until they were acquired by The Planet and since then everything’s gone downhill.
@Samuel - I agree with Trevor. I haven’t heard good things about theplanet.com since their merge.
@Birger - I did check out mosso.com and researched them. Their method is very attractive for $100, but Mosso doesn’t seem to be reliable based on what I read.
@Ma - I’ve actually tried Direct Admin, but like Cpanel more because it comes with more features. I don’t mind the $15 difference.
I’m using resellerzoom.com. Have been with them for about 2 years and have had no problems. My hosting company now has about 15 sites. I’m happy with them…and so are my customers
The cost difference of hard disk are low. The retail price difference between a single 80Gb and a single 250GB is 10 to 20 USD. My advice is not to go for 80GB Hard Drive, but to choose a RAID 160Gb or 250GB solution. Usually hosting companies offer this for an additional 10 to 15 USD a month in compression to a single 80GB hard disk.
Also look at their SLA (Service Level Agreement) Some might sound like a good deal, till you have to pay 90 USD an hour for 2 hours work, just to replace a hard disk! If you are unlucky this might take 1 to 3 days. This happens when hosting companies are reselling dedicated servers and have no staff at the datacenter! Imagine your server not being online for 2 or 3 days!
Another thing is too look at the backup services and what they do once your server is offline (shit happens). A good hosting company offers daily backups (usually up to 10GB free) and also has a backup server for email. So incase your server is offline (shit happens), you still have pop3 email access.
Also check their email and phone availability and response time. Some companies are fast In responding before and during the sales part. But once you have been a client for few months, response may be a lot lower. Make sure they truly have a minimum 20 hour a day support and service. To test this, just call the service nr a 3am! See if it gets picked up and what the response it. If they do pickup, but cannot solve your server problem outside working hours, that they might as well not pickup! Just imagine your site being offline after business hours till the next day when business starts. This could men 16+ hours downtime!
Also you can try searching and reading some reviews on webhostingtalk.com
AR - Thanks for the great tips! I second your point about SLA. I called the host that I’m trying to get a refund from and their phone support is a total mess. I know their sales department is off on weekends, but I couldn’t even get through to customer service, which means I would be looking at 24-48 hours of downtime if I ever host with them and come across a problem.
Their live chat support is also a blatant lie. The killer is that I found them through webhostingtalk.com hahaha.
Most hosting companies promise 24/7 support, but only a few really have 24/7 support. The others are usally 1 man companies, with no staff in datacenters + 1 outsourced tech for updating the server.
Another method for finding a good hosting company for dedicated servers is to look at A+ websites, that cannot afford to be offline. Then trace their nameserver to see who is hosting them.
Btw have you already tried http://www.rackspace.com ?
Rackspace.com is more than I can afford. Plus, I’m not looking for managed services.
Im moving to them in November… http://www.cirtexhosting.com. Im Not sure if that is what you are looking for or not, but Im trying to help!
I came across cirtexthosting.com yesterday. It looks like they’re overselling you, way overselling :).
Why?
“www.cirtexhosting.com.” I would not recommend that as I have two shared hosting with them, they do oversell and we pay for it. lol
Sites are down constant. Nice host though if you want a friend. I;m sure they have a serious offer for some serious sites, mine are low traffic sites and hosted cheaply on their servers which cheap gives a true meaning.
i’m sure your aware of this site. http://webhostingtalk.com
To get you to buy. Most host these days do that to get more customers. They oversell. But when you actually need to use all the resources that suppose to come with your account, they won’t give it to you.
Try this one: http://e-starr.com
They’re really good.
Nick over at N.Design Studio went with ImHosted.
You can read more about it here: http://www.ndesign-studio.com/blog/updates/found-a-new-host/
@Jenny - They don’t offer dedicated plans.
@Birger - Thanks Birger. I came across Nick’s post while searching for a host, but I doubt that Imhosted would extend the same deal to Wpdesigner :).
Third recommendation:
http://slicehost.com/
your commentors seems to too less about hostings.
try and check mediatemple.net, superb.net, hostgator.com( dont recommend their dedicated though), theplanet.com, liquidweb.com and softlayer.com
then there is also mosso.com with its unique hosting package.
and the best resource of finding whts hot in hosting is to go to webhostingtalk.com, i go to this forum only to check advertisments.
umair - I go to the same place for hosting, webhostingtalk.com. Most of your suggestions already appeared in earlier comments.
I haven’t checked out softlayer.com yet. But at first glance, their prices are beyond what I can afford for hosting at this point.
Birger - Slicehost.com received good reviews, but you have to wait pretty long to get in.
I’d highly recommend the one I’ve been using for all my blogs (22 of them):
http://www.pair.com/
The “webmaster” account maybe what you’re looking for.
It depends on what package you go for, and for how long you plan on buying in advance. And yes, I think SliceHost is a great service..
Not cheap and for a dedicated server or VPS you’ll have to request a quote from the owner Steve Mizrahie but HTTPme (http://www.httpme.com) are THE best. I ran a small host with 300+ customers for 4 years thanks to their unbelievably brilliant services and amazing ongoing support. Well worth considering.
I’m using netjaguar.com. DirectAdmin Panel is fantastic! In few days they will have also dedicated servers.
I’m using http://slicehost.com/ , it’s simple but it isn’t very fast
Well, I remember seeing my gravatar face when I posted a comment on this thread.. and now there is no comment above. Did Akismet get me? or did you delete my comment? t.i.a.
Neither, It’s probably because I backed up an earlier version of this blog, one that didn’t register your comment. Sorry about that
aha! That makes sense. Now that I think of it, I did come back later and you were “moving servers” finally. (something I am quite familiar with the time delay of restorations and moving - D’oh!).
I moved 43 blogs last month combining 2 servers to a new VPS account. I probably will outgrow this account in a few months and go to dedicated server. My question was out of curiosity, which dedicated server did you refund after one day in your update. And, while I’m at it - where are you at now? Smooth transition?
I tried to get a refund from HiVelocity.net, but I decided to stick with them after a brief phone conversation with the account manager.
Smooth transition? Far from it because I was the one handling the transition and I’m a newbie at dedicated server. I ended up hiring Platinum Server Management to sort things out for me and that was the only smooth part.

Hey Maninder - Thanks man, but I already got my server set up and current running this blog on it.
I ran into this gigabitdc.com last morning in a another forum. I also have seen very good reviews for them.
