CSS Gallery Theme Preview
It’s been days since I updated you on my the CSS gallery theme project. Welp, here comes the preview. The image to the right is a screenshot of just one of the color schemes for this theme.
As you can see, other than the fact that I’m still stuck in the minimalist phase, this theme puts content first. It doesn’t distract you from the sites being featured, unlike some galleries out there.
At the top is a simple, but straight forward horizontal menu. Under the content is pagination style navigation. You browse the site by selecting the page number that you want to visit. In the sidebar, there’s room for four 125 by 125 pixel banners (change to 6 or 8 banners if you like). Following the ads is the usual stuff like listing of categories.
Although the screenshot shows an example of DOMTab behind the list of categories, DOMTab will not get bundled with the default package. However, there will be guides and easy templates for your to copy and paste in order to add DOMTab to your CSS gallery theme.
There are other bells and whistles that you can’t preview through a design screenshot. Hopefully, I will have a demo up and running for you soon. What’s more important for this theme is how it functions not how it looks.
At the beginning of this project, I just wanted to build a WordPress theme that could power a CSS gallery site. That’s it, no fancy-smancy elaborate designs. And, I think that’s what I ended up with. Personally, I love the clean and simple look, but I’d understand if you think that it looks a bit plain.
Other Color Schemes:
If you have suggestions for me, please post them in the comments. Thanks in advance and I’ll probably finish up within a few days, just in time to release it at the beginning of September. Note: unlike previous themes, this will be released as a paid theme.

First up, I like what I see. Will we need any additional plugins for functionality & have you thought about the price for theme?
As of right now, it’ll work out of the box. Plugins are optional, simply to enhance some parts here and there.
excellent, and what were your thoughts on price?
Low $xx - High $xx or $xxxxxxx
I’m not sure what the price will be yet. I’m thinking … mid $xx…?
no no …. price is atleast 100$… dont make it cheap.
Why do you say “stuck” in a minimalist “phase”? You make it sound like a bad thing.
I think the screenshot looks great.
Hi SP!
I’ve been waiting for this theme since you talked about it.
I like what I see. Great work there!
Ideas for you to consider:
- The possibility to put more thumbnails on the page (minimize the size of them and put 3/4/5 in each row) and 2/3 bigger on the top; Or even eliminate the big one and have only small thumbs;
- The possibility to add a vote plugin in each thumb, for the users vote in them and to make something like Top10/Best voted…;
- To use the sidebar in the bottom of the page (like a footer) and have only the thumbs displayed in all the website window (I think this option would be just great!).
This ideas are what I’ve thought for now.
If I remember something more I’ll tell you.
Keep up the good work.
Regards
I suggest the css gal to sp.
So SP. when click the thumbnail what happened ?
Lightbox. >> click to the image and go to the site.
One Click to see the site more bigger, another to visit the link, like screenalicious.
Please dont, like screenfluent: Lightbox. >> click to the image and quite the preview. If you can read a ugly small links at the top of pop-up you can visit. But if you scroll down the site and wants to visit another, the ugly small links, simple you cant view.
Example:
http://img5.imagevenue.com/…
So 1-2 or 3 clicks ?
Keep the job SP!
How do you come up with color schemes? I’m a new designer and always seem to have this problem…
Wow. Awesome job! Will there be a unique price? If so, I call first dibs!
Will the thumbs be auto generated or is it the old screen grab?
Julie - Thanks
Ricardo - The big feature site thumbnail is optional. If you want small thumbnails, each column divides evenly into two 146px columns with 10px spacer in between the columns. I’m not too sure about the rating plugin. Maybe I’ll implement it on single post pages. As for use of bottom sidebars to have some kind of footer area, you will see some of that, plus some layout variations.
Andra - I’m not going to use Lightbox. Clicking on the thumbnail will take you straight to the site.
Rob - There are a handful of sites that can help you with that problem. I’m currently using kuler.adobe.com.
Nate - I haven’t decided on that yet.
I’ll look into auto generating the screenshots. Thanks for the tip Graeme.
SP - dude, very nice design. Can’t wait to see it and curious to know what is the price range for it.
If the price is right, I’ll pay for it. Email me.
John
I have no idea how to automate that- I was just thinking about scalability. I have my own plan in mind for this theme and it’s not a CSS Gallery - or an adult site - and I wouldn’t need the auto generated screen shot.
I see. I’ll try to find a way to automate it anyway because that’s a simpler solution for the user’s end. However, even if it’s possible, it will not get bundled with the default package.
This theme is definitely useful multiple types of blogs, not just to power a CSS gallery. You can use it as a portfolio, photoblog, or etc.
This is so cool. Will there be an option to use the site multiple times if we’re a web developer for our clients? Maybe a single priced theme, and then a price for multiple uses?
Awesome work!
You are always surprising with new stuff SP! That’s great!
