Showcase: WordPress CSS Gallery Theme

showcase.jpg This is the official release of the Showcase theme that I’ve been working on for the past several days.

Showcase is a premium (paid) WordPress theme created to power a CSS or web design gallery, which is also ideal for managing online portfolios and photo blogs. If you want to use WordPress as a web design gallery, Showcase is the solution you’ve been looking for. Beyond its core features, it comes with 5 different color schemes and 8 layout variations.

dark.jpg neutral-blue.jpg yellow.jpg cherry-cheesecake.jpg

Features

  • Custom Layout / Design to Display Gallery Images - This is a very clean, simple layout made to allow lots of flexing room so you can modify and modify until your heart’s content.
  • Hover Menu On Mouse Over - This is sort of a little toy that I added for fun, but it turned out to be very useful. You can style it the way you want to. You can re-position it to make it appear where you want it to. Not to mention, this useful little toy will be put your gallery above many CSS or web design galleries out there that are not taking advantage of hover menus.
  • Pre-styled Sidebar Button Banners - If your gallery isn’t a personal photo album, more than likely, you’ll monetize it. So I thought, why not help you do that? I designed a block in the sidebar to display pre-styled button banner ads. You can read the readme.html on how to add it to your sidebar.
  • Integrated Plugins: WP-PostRatings and WP-PageNavi - WP-PageNavi improves usability by allowing users to browse the gallery using page numbers instead of the default Next and Previous page links for every page. WP-PostRatings is another neat little toy, integrated just in case you want to allow users to rate each entry of your gallery.
  • 5 Different Color Schemes - Along with the default white and light gray color scheme, Showcase comes bundled with four different skins that you can use to change the color scheme. As you can see, you can make drastic changes through simple modifications. Those four skins are only the beginning of what you can do with Showcase.
  • 8 Easy to Rotate Layout Variations - Sure, color changes are cool, but that might not be enough. I understand it’s important to be unique. That’s why I made it very easy for you to use different layout variations. This is how you can separate your gallery from the rest of the galleries using Showcase.
  • Valid XHTML and CSS - All core templates and CSS styles are valid. Of course, did you expect less from me?
  • Widget Ready Sidebars - The right sidebar column is actually made up of 3 separate widget ready sidebars.
  • Easy Single Right Sidebar Column to Three Bottom Sidebar Columns Conversion - Through only one easy CSS change, you can go from having one right sidebar to having three bottom sidebars.
  • Search Engine Optimized Sidebar Titles

Looking great. My only remark’s actually related to the topic of your previous post - these hovers, as neat and elegantly designed as they are, seem a bit obtrusive to me - they basically cover most of the thumbnail/preview area each time you get your mouse over them. Any way of moving them further away from the pics?

Yup, you can position it wherever you want.

Awww, it isn’t free.

Fred:

wow , it’s expensive!! someone with a free version is defiantly going to kill the market.

it looks nice though - great work

Considering a regular poorly made WordPress theme by TemplateMonster is around $60, $70 for Showcase is nowhere near expensive.

Wow Potato, great work!!!

Great job yet again, it’s something unique and i don’t think it’s expensive at all considering the amount of work that was poured into it plus this the only theme out there right now that’s geared towards a showcase kinda site.

Congrats man, good work.

You might want to consider http://www.e-junkie.com to automate your selling process. :)

Very nice! :D

Looks really good bro. There’s a possibility I might be using that!

Very nice! The only thing I don’t like is the hover effect..

Looks awesome SP! Keep up the good work!

is it the end day of some popular showcase sites?

great :) $70 reasonable price for me. coz i know the pain to do that :P i just created my personal showcase at http://csssnap.com

same concept like SP. SP CSS Gallery Theme much better. Keep up the good work.

SP - dude, I love it. So the Showcase package includes all 8 different layouts? What kind of support will you be providing, email? Or just through forum?

I’m considering. It’s really nice and clean.

John

Thanks for the compliments everyone.

Design Creme / Dennison? - The hover menu can be turned off.

John - The 8 different layout variations are not separate from each other. You work with 2 files. Through simple changes or tweaks, you can rotate through those 8 layouts. How to do it is all in the readme.html file.

But if you need help, for premium theme customers, I provide email and forum support.

Very nice design!
I might purchase it…
I don’t quite know yet.
We’ll see.

Giovanni:

I think it’s wrong you sell the theme, like I saw in the preview….

You use plugins developeds by other people….
it’s simple not honest by your part…

You say the conditions that people who buy, should agree,
but you don’t say that people who developed the plugins that you integrated with your theme will receive part of the whole money…..

it’s opensource, but do things right….
anyway It’s just my opinion…

[]’s

Giovanni:

I saw at another post here, that you “say” download the plugin post ratings… and integrate with your theme…

anyway I think it’s wrong by your part sell the theme.
:)

but, be happy :)

Giovanni - I think you misunderstood me.

My theme does not need those plugins to work. Integrated means I’ve already styled for those plugins to work with the Showcase theme and all you have to do is install them.

Integrated does NOT mean I’m packaging those plugins and selling them with this theme.

A nice piece of work (I’m sure quite difficult). For someone looking for an “off the shelf” gallery, $70 is a mere pittance.

Really nice work for the masses. How many more CSS galleries will we now see?

Way to go, Small Potato!! This theme is awesome. I can’t wait to use it.

Thanks Daniel - I just finished sending you your copy of Showcase :)

Harley:

I’d consider buying this, but how does it differ from other galleries that have the same functionality, like the one at bestwebgallery.com or feedmyapp.com or pixel-crunch.net ? It seems, as long as you put up with simple posting an image and placing everything else in a div that you can display:none for the front page you can create a near identical effect. Just wondering ^_^

~Harley

Except for the hover menu, which can be turned off. Showcase doesn’t depend on display: none;.

I can’t say whether the backbone of Showcase is similar to bestwebgallery, feemyapp, and etc. because I don’t know how those sites do it.

Aww poo. I don’t have money…ever…but it is a nice theme. Oh well. To those who get it, enjoy!

Looks good, I know the pain of setting one up myself. Packaging it as a theme is great! One question: Are the screenshots saved on the same DB as WordPress?

You mean were they live screenshots or just Photoshop?

This is a beautiful theme, SP. You are truely talented. Tell me something. How did you start out learning to code for templates.

Thanks PB. Just keep reading the WordPress.org Codex. That’s how I got started.

It looks great, like everything you do.

great work. i am amazed how quickly you can produce high quality work.

but i was thinking header and logo seems to be missing ??

Wow man I really admire your skills. Excellent job and interesting the way you have documented the whole process of developing it. Just a pity I can’t afford to buy this theme right now though its definitely worth the bucks, not expensive at all. I do agree though that the rollover obstructs too much of the page. All round it’s great though, great work man.

>>but i was thinking header and logo seems to be missing ??

I would consider the navigation area the header. And the logo could go anywhere that the individual who purchased the theme wishes it to go. It would be fairly simple to modify the header area and place a logo to the left of the navigation.

Very very nice.

Thanks, wery cool and easy to use template!!!

@ SP

I was curious if the screenshots are auto generated each time a page loads or if they are captured and saved someplace in a DB, if the latter, is it on the same DB as WordPress. When I set my first gallery site, I was torn between the two options and decided to go with the latter.

Latter with the same DB.

From what I’ve read about auto generated screen captures, it sounds like that actually put more stress on the server.

If that’s the case then most low to mid level galleries should be able to survive with auto generated captures, but traffic spikes would definitely crash all of the galleries that are not prepared with a dedicated server.

Granted, you can always use third party auto-generation services, but if you’re serious about running a gallery site then you should look to install auto-generated captures on your own server.

Way to go! It’s undoubtedly a very useful piece of work.

What makes a premium Wordpress theme?

Great design, exactly what I needed for my new project. Thanks again, Small Potato.

Jessi:

Disappointing it’s not free. Why would you charge for this? Because of the hard work you put into it? Don’t you realize Wordpress, the cms your theme runs on, took a lot more time to develop than this did and yet WP is free…

@Jessi - I don’t deserve to profit off of my own work? Your comment is wrong on so many levels :). And not that it matters much, but I released over 40 free themes prior to this one.

FrancisQ:

Great theme, shame you opted for the paid route. Shooting yourself in the foot really. People came to know small potato as the free theme guru. Introducing premium themes just doesn’t sit right with your collection. It would have been far wiser to promote your paid design services a bit rather than slap a price on one theme. Shame…

The other issue is that the CSS style gallery market is saturated. I would have opted for an E-zine type theme instead. That’s a niche still worth tapping into. Brian Gardner did well in that respect with his Revolution theme.

And for all those not wanting to purchase this theme, rest assured that it will be a matter of weeks before someone releases a free gallery type theme, I can guarantee that :)

Thanks for the suggestion Francis. By the way, I’m releasing a magazine-styled theme pretty soon… for free.

Thanks for everything SP, we’ve found purchasing your layout was a great investment for our webiste. Instead of using it for a CSS gallery, we’ve turned it in to our own Myspace Layouts site. You can view it here: http://www.lcdlove.com/

Does anybody have suggestions on how to handle large amounts of traffic to wordpress sites? Caching plugin?

Really neat! Maybe I’ll make a purchase soon.

LCDLOVE - The wp-cache plugin is definitely helping out my blog right now.

Lisa - If you have any question, you can find me at the Wpdesigner support forums :)

Chad:

I apologize if i have missed something, but how are pictures and content added. Also, can descriptions be added to each showcased item. I would like to use this theme as part of my portfolio site, i just want to know how content is added and managed.

Thanks !

Chad - Along with the regular method to add content, this theme uses extra custom fields. It has a readme.html file to get you started. Descriptions can be added, but where descriptions will show up depends on you.

How do you submit a site to the blog to display? Are you attaching a file, or some other method?

There’s no submission method for the users. The sites get added by the gallery’s manager (you). If you want to allow submissions, install a contact form plugin or some sort to allow user-submissions.

Sorry, perhaps I should have been more specific. I mean’t how do you add images, is it dynamic? Do you browse/upload ’send to editor’ or use a screenshot plugin? Custom field plugin? etc..

no send to and no plugins, but it does use custom fields

supercool designs!

Icyone:

Small Potato is there a way to have the name of the website or header even small logo.

Looks great however I would want visitors to know where they are and I do not see that on the demo

You can easily modify it to give it a logo like this site http://www.looppress.com , which is currently using Showcase.

Icyone:

Thanks for your quick reply. Will a beginner who has a little bit of knowledge (me) be able to figure this out?

Also can it be purchased without knowing the domain that it will be used on yet? Thanks for your help

If you don’t know any css or xhtml then it’s not likely you’ll figure it out. And yes, you can buy it without the domain.

Hi Small Potato,

Quick question, can the thumbnails on the main page link to standard pages instead of the featured page?

For example a user would click on a model from the index, then be displayed with a that models thumbnail gallery page, each of the thumbnails could be clicked to display the featured page for that image?

Hope that makes sense and is do-able.

Cheers

The thumbnails can be linked to external and internal pages.

Icyone:

Thanks SP I do have a basic knowledge of CSS and XHTML and do understand the concepts and do see the div for logo and header on your logo example web site. I’m just not great at it.
I also see…

But if you need help, for premium theme customers, I provide email and forum support.

I’m assuming if I could not figure it out help is available?

This is perfect for my family’s art studio and I’m really excited about using it.

Either way I’m soon to commit and purchase this great theme

Posted on November 19th, 2007 at 10:14 pm

If it uses a custom fields can you pull the images so that they can appear in the RSS field or does that occur automatically?

No. It’s not automatic.

Icyone:

I’ve always loved your themes and you have always been quick to help.

Now with this premium theme it seems the helpfulness has just gone away.

Maybe some fried food is needed for a respite from too much work.

Even small tip on the header logo would have encouraged me and perhaps other novices to purchase it.

Even if it was one of the several ways to do it in the readme.html file

Now I think I’ll pass

Just an opinion from a novice who still loves your templates and your work…No offense meant just my 2 cents

I understand your view, but helping with customizations take a lot of time and there’s no direct guide to do it with. If I help one person simply because it’s a minor job then it wouldn’t be fair to say no to everyone else.

Even with free themes, if it sounds like you’ve been lazy then I wouldn’t say anything. On the other hand, if it sounds like you’ve done your research, but haven’t found any solution then I’d lead you in the right direction.

You can go through the Wpdesigner support forums for examples of what I’d help with.

Icyone:

I do know you help as every time I have ever needed help with free themes you have always been so quick to help with me and others.

It just sounded lately you have been a little “short” is all.

Yes I have seen almost every post on the forum, you have taken time to answer personally.

My opinion was that a premium theme should get just as much help as the free ones or even a little more.

I held my opinion for a while because I do know the fantastic work and help you do for free. However it was bugging me so I just thought I would get it off my chest so to speak.

By the way I do understand some of the silly questions you do receive, but also think showcase would be many times more popular with a header option perhaps built in.

Just an opinion. And thanks for taking my view in the proper context and I too understand yours also

So I purchased installed, & modified. Some issues because i made major modifications. but all in all I am happy with the investment.

I got the site up and traffic started coming… and people subscribed through the feed… then they unsubscribed….

The reason was that since their are no images in the post section off the theme nothing other than the title shows up in the feed

This I believe needs to be fixed in the future.

Till then I would appreciate any suggestions on how to fix this issue

PS I checked similar wordpress sites and their feeds work fine.. with the full picture and the url linked to it showing up in the feed.

thanks

Thanks for the feedback Nolawi. It isn’t a big problem, but it’s a tedious job. Start adding the images to the content box (where you type text for regular blog posts).

Dear Potato,
I would like to buy your theme.

Just a question… it is possible to customize it (on my own) to use it for a video podcast gallery ?

Every video page could have more than a clips…

Please let me know,
thanks.

It is possible. This theme uses a custom field to fetch the images. You can create your own custom field, put in the video codes for each video and make the templates fetch for videos codes instead of images.

Then, you can add more videos in the posting area to make them show up on the video pages or non-home pages.

Small;
That fixes it, and I don’t mind doing that from now on but since the single page image is coming from the custom field is there a way to change it to come from the post instead of custom field.

Since in the long run it would be redundant to put the same image in the custom field and in the post.

what I am asking is how do you change how the single page post is retrieving the image?

If you do put images in the posting area, wouldn’t it be easier to switch the template from retrieving custom fields to retrieving the_content() ?

Love the theme. I was wondering how I would go about making the homepage be a list of categories which contain posts rather than the home page being the gallery itself. What I want to do is have multiple “sub-galleries” within the site organized by category and you would see the list of all these “sub-galleries” on the home page. Any recommendations? Hope this makes sense. Thanks!
