WP Remix WordPress Theme

wpremix.png WP Remix is the second theme to join the Wpdesigner’s marketplace and the first to get approved for a full feature and review.

(This is a sponsored review. However, this theme had to go through inspection first.)

Unlike several premium themes already in the market, WP Remix is easy to set up by novice users. However, packaged with well over 20 layout variations, it’s safe to say Bhavesh made WP Remix for the developers to remix until their hearts’ content.

While it’s easy for novice users to set up, it isn’t so easy for the same group to realize the potential of WP Remix. Visit the WP Remix home page for several examples of remixes or skins of this theme.

Speaking of layout variations and the potential this theme gives you, below are some examples of the layout variations:

Pros

  • Flexible design.
  • Built for modifiation.
  • More than 20 pre-made templates for you to play with.
  • Nicely structured and commented CSS codes for you to learn the basic structure.
  • Good author support.

Design

Design-wise, WP Remix’s minimalistic, but flexible design has some minor spacing, alignment, and cross-browser issues. Mainly, I think the font size for the main column is too small.

If you must use this theme with the default set up and styles then increase the font size.

Code and Structure

In the beginning, there were some invalid XHTML like an unclosed meta tag, which is trivial. Fortunately for the theme author, Bhavesh, he’s been going back and forth with me for several days to grind out the details. I’m happy to say the errors are all fixed.

If there was a Small Potato care and effort test, I’d say Bhavesh passed it. Everything I’ve pointed out, he’s been quick to fix. For example, I mentioned the style.css file was a bit large at 21kb so he cleaned up the codes and brought it down to 19kb. At least, my experience with Bhavesh should give you an idea of what kind of support you’ll get.

Main Con

My main issue with this theme is the use of free icons, images, and photos. Not because they’re free, but because they’re not referenced and I haven’t seen any licenses for them that says they can be distributed commercially. Although Bhavesh does warn you against using them for anything other than simple placeholders for presentation purposes only, it still bugs me that the sources are not referenced.

Just to be on the safe side, take Bhavesh’s warning seriously and replace those icons, images, and photos.

Conclusion

The downfalls are sourceless icons, images, and photos. But, those issues will be solved and you can easily work around them for the moment. Also, the author makes up for it with good support.

WP Remix has lots of potential and it’ll save you time if you find those layout variations useful. For a surprisingly low price, $55, this theme actually gives you more flexing room than most of the premium themes already in the market.

For novice users, I’d recommend this theme if you’re looking for a wide column theme or an e-commerce styled theme (if you combine the Home templates with the Gallery and Product Details templates.)

Ultimately, if you’re a theme author looking for good theme to base your projects on, WP Remix’s huge list of layout variations will come in handy.

I feel, the theme has been divided in to two parts, which are not connected.. or blended well ?

It’s a cool concept!

But there are some minor bugs and layout spacing that needs to be sorted. Increase the padding :D

I like this theme. Although it could be better. :)

I have a quick question, what would be the proper way of citing your sources if you use free icons and photos? I saw that mentioned in the main cons of the theme.

Thanks!

@dinsan - Not really two parts.

@Paul - You could reference the original place where you’ve gotten them from. Link to their original licenses. If they were released for commercial use or resell then make sure you’ve gotten permission for resell or commercial redistritubion.

Show proof of your permissions as well.

This might be my problem but the link to his portfolio gives me a DNS error: “Sorry, the page you were looking for cannot be found”

I see it the error too Rob. It’s probably temporary.

Icyone:

Hi SP am I correct that I can use it for more than one of my families sites

What’s Included?
* The credits in the footer must not be removed.
* You can use the theme for your personal sites

On the personal package.

I know it says that just want to double check.

This looks very handy and perfect for a couple projects

Thanks for your time.

Icyone - I am not sure, please try confirm this with the author at WPRemix.com. Here’s the contact page.

My initial reaction is that it looks like it’s based on the Revolution theme with more features. Interesting…..

Icyone:

Sorry SP I thought it was yours,

I did not pay attention of the author (silly me)

absolon:

@Icyone

From theme FAQ:
If you wish to use the theme for two of your personal sites, you should buy personal package only and you could use it as many time you want.

Icyone:

Thank you absolon

The variation amount is outstanding.

It’s interesting. Can’t afford it though. And don’t really want it.

Shireen Quequish:

I like it but I cant afford it :( hopefully when I have some cash on hand I can buy it

absolon:

2 cents about theme.
It’s impressive amount of variation.
Maybe author should set up forum for users? It would be good place to exchange ideas and help each other ;)
I think I would be interested in.

Why does the link to barelyfitz for the tabber code not work? Any idea.

Great theme by Bhavesh.

I like this theme too
thanks a lot

Hyder - The link does work.

I love the concept of a flexible theme to build a custom look. Having all those variations is great, but I’m surprised that there doesn’t seem to be any that put the sidebar on the right.

Icyone:

Purchase it and have no idea how to make it work and I,m not a total noobe but as stated above a forum or help page would be handy

Icyone:

Just received prompt help explaining where to look for the help I needed

very nice, considerate and quick reply from the contact page.

Thanks so much

I may be overlooking the answer, but I’m having trouble finding out if the theme offers color options for background, lnes, and text. Can you help me figure that out?

Currently, WP Remix doesn’t have a theme options page.

Cawlin:

After increasing the text size only 2 levels in my browser the page completely breaks. I would not consider it a flexible design.

Cawlin - I meant flexible in terms of how far you can modify it. Although it’s uncommon that a layout would break after two text increases, it’s not hard to break the layout in general for fixed-width themes.

Cawlin:

Ah yes sorry my misunderstanding. On the topic I will certainly agree that it is common for fixed width sites to break when scaled. This is a bad thing and should not be an accepted fact.

Looking at the basic layout there is no reason why it could not scale appropriately. Premium prices should mean premium coding.

It’s definitely something Bhavesh can improve on for WP Remix.

We liked the theme so much we purchased it. However, there is essentially no printed or online help with it. Since I am only familiar with standard Wordpress Themes, I need someone to point to tutorials or something that explain how to use these other features. At present I am “dead in the water” as far as using it.

S.P. Continual thanks for providing a great site and resource for us.

Richard - If you need help, definitely contact the theme author. I’ve dealt with him and he was very helpful.

Thanks, Small Potato. So far we haven’t been able to get any response from R. Bhavesh. Perhaps he is out of town or snowed under with orders. Our needs are pretty simple - just more details about activating and and using the many different features of the theme. We will, of course, post again should help be forthcoming, and share such with other readers of your blog.

rcravy - I just replied to one of his emails and also pointed him to your comment.

@ rcravy - Sorry man. Could you please send me your query again through - http://wpremix.com/contact/

[…] This theme is really a bargain at $55, Small Potato did a review of this theme and you can find it here. […]

I recently purchased this theme for a website my husband and I are developing. Neither of us has designed a website before now, although we both customized our blogs just bit (I switched themes, so I have little need for that right now), learning just enough CSS and HTML to get us going.

After purchasing WP Remix, I was immediately overwhelmed! There are so many options. I must say, though, I thought the theme offered a little more “enter your information here” and it would “pop up.” So needless to say, I quickly sent Bhavesh emails asking him questions about how to begin customizing my site.

People need to know that if you need the support, Bhavesh provides it. I have emailed him several times, and he has been so incredibly responsive! He responds generally within a day, and he’s been so gracious in his support. We have a ways to go in customizing our site, yet WP Remix is a wonderful start. I am very pleased with this premium theme, most of all because of the support Bhavesh provides. I highly recommend spending the $55 for this theme - the support more than justifies the price.

Spend a little time in the css to improve the padding/margins/font styles and this really would fit the bill for many projects. I’d personally get rid of the justified text, it rarely works well on the web, oh and update that copyright date ;-). Lots of work has been put into this for sure.

Very nice review. I am thinking of using WPREMIX for my client.

It’s a cool concept!

I think this theme looks killer - very clean and professional. I love all the layout options and the ecommerce option is just what I need right now.

The comments about lack of documentation and instructions concerns me a bit…but it is good to know the author is responsive with support.

Thanks for the great review!

Thanks for the review of this product, it’s been really helpful in helping me make the decision to buy it. Now to try it out! Thanks again.

Very cool theme. Could your please design for Car Insurance matter? I’m very appreciated when you created it for all car insurance blog masters.
