Introducing the Five Dollar Themes Club

Rub your eyes and read it again. If it says Five Dollar Themes Club then you weren’t wrong the first time around. It’s not $5 dollar per theme, per download, or per month. It’s $5 per year.
I’m going to launch a WordPress themes club on January 23rd 24th. Membership is $5 for 12 months. If someone ask you how to make $5 last for a whole year, tell them to join the club!
What can you get for five bucks? A lot! For less than the price of a domain name or a medium-sized cup of coffee, you get every available theme at the initial launch of the themes club and at least 12 more themes throughout your one-year membership. What does that mean? It means each theme will cost less than 40 cents.
How about quality? Judge for yourself here and here. More of them are coming and all of them will be available on January 23rd.
Does support comes with $5? Yes. You get personal and community support. That basically means you can ask for help through a ticket system or bring your question to the forums so everyone there can help you. Typically, you’ll get a quicker response from the forums.
How do the club themes stack up to other premium themes? You’ll get to see for yourself. Live demos will be online prior to the launch date. One thing to keep in mind is the club themes are mostly made for blogs, not magazines and news groups. However, don’t be surprised if the club themes come with features similar to those premium magazine or news themes.
What else do you need to know? I’m glad you asked

Unlike other clubs guaranteeing only 12 more themes (1 per month). This club guarantees AT LEAST 12 more. Some months will feature multiple theme releases. - No Footer Copyright Labels
Charging a fee for removing the copyright message in the footer is common practice, but you will not have to pay for that. - One License Fits All
If you’ve been hired to create a theme for a client, go ahead and use one of the club themes as the base for your project. You DO NOT have to pay for a developer license. And if you have time, show off your modification or creation at the forums. - A Theme for Every Occasion
With everything you’ll get for just $5, you’ll be able to change the look of your blog based on special events (birthdays, holidays, Pink for October, etc.) without having to sacrifice quality or waste time and money on those occasions. I’m not suggesting you should do that, but you could for the fun of it
. - Multiple Designers
Later this year, I will hire designers to fulfill club members’ requests and to give you variety because getting designs from one designer over and over again might get a bit boring. Although I’m offering this club for only $5 per year, I don’t want you to get bored out of your mind! - Wpdesigner’s Themes Club Is No Cookie Cutter
If you can’t already tell by the price, I’m not trying to start another boring club to make fast money. So what am I doing exactly? I’m shaking up the paid themes market and proving something here. You don’t always get what you pay for. Once in a while, if you’re lucky, you get something better.

$100 per year? Would be a steal. 12 themes for the price of most people’s single premium theme. That I expected. But no …
Just to be honest, I’m not sure whether to think you are an evil genius with a master plan behind all this … or you are clinically insane.
Whatever you have up your sleeve … I’m curious to know. I’m just a little speechless right now. You’re probably not a big “chat” person, but I’d love to talk to you about this stuff off the record sometime. Hit me up if you’re game. You know how to get ahold of me.

I agree with Nathan. You could easily charge, say, $100 for this and I reckon many of not most of the same people would pay. No doubt you’ve done your maths by reference to the number of prior downloads of your themes or the like, but by crikey, may I respectfully suggest you don’t undersell yourself? You’re talented and people will come at a higher price.

@Richard - Thanks! Even at $100, I’m sure I could get a big enough of a following to fund all my traveling abroad for the whole year, but $5 per year is going to make 2008 a very interesting year for me and Wpdesigner.com.

That’s awesome SP! I’m not much of a fan of premium themes and their over-pricing, and was kind of disappointed when you were talking about releasing your own ones.
This is pure genius though. The price is small enough not to matter at all to anyone after a good template, but the fact that there actually is a price will be enough to stop the over-usage that great free themes suffer from.

I am definitely in, and I have a question (although #3 sort of fits). Can we use these themes on WPMU installs? As in, web admins who are setting up a free blog host need templates for their users to choose from. Users cannot edit the templates, just like at wordpress.com.
If that’s okay (and it would be fab for you), then I am doubly in and I *will* blog it on launch day.
At this rate, I’m so excited, i’m resisting the all caps. (Oh, and as per the other thread, I second the vote for Canada, although you might want to wait until it is warmer.)

A lot of those so called “premium themes” don’t deserve that title, but who am I to say that. They’ll see, and they will with your badass theme’s club.

Andrea, if there’s anything I need to know about coding themes for WPMU, please let me know through email. I don’t have any experience with WPMU. ***I have to note this for everyone else, the one thing you’re not allowed to do is resell it or redistribute it for free.***

I would have been happy to pay $5 for just the Personal Theme, so this is awesome. Also, “One License Fits All” is impressive. Major selling point right there, but at $5 you could market it with no points.

On the one hand I agree with some people that $ 5 a year is very little for those dedicated to templates. That is not easy to do, although enjoyable for budding. Second, I think I understand his idea of bringing a large number of people for his work.
