March 06 WordPress Links Round-Up

Reduce Comment Spam to Zero Without Akismet
After my trouble with Akismet, I tried Arpit’s suggestion on reducing spam. It worked! I used to get hundreds of spam comments and trackbacks per day, which makes it hard for me to find ones that were accidentally marked as spam. Now, I get less than a handful of spam comments every couple of days. Although I am still using Akismet as a back up, I have other plugins acting as the first line of defense.

48 Unique Ways to Use WordPress
Bothered by the complexity of installing magazine themes, about ten days ago, I told everyone that WordPress is a blog platform first and foremost so stop trying to do too much with it. This link basically proves that I was wrong. Hey, when you’re wrong, you’re wrong. And ten days ago, I was wrong! However, that doesn’t mean some WordPress theme authors aren’t trying to do too much. Like I said before, if I don’t need to read a lengthy manual to install WordPress then don’t make me read one to install a WordPress theme.

The Future of WordPress Themes
Warning: This is a very long post made up of opinions by notable theme authors and bloggers blogging about WordPress.

Thanks for the links .. The second one caught my attention :)
For the last one, I think you meant WordPress 2.5 and not 2.2.5 :)

Thanks Ahmed. It’s fixed.

Interseting article and read about the future of WP themes, although one or two are missing the point, how come no comments by SP?

You know, in all the posts I read about stopping spam, not one has mentioned using internal options. They do a decent job of stopping quite a bit. Actualy, they do 3 out of the 4 points mentioned for the Simple Spam Filter. (which yes, I have tried)

Trackback spam is a seperate issue though. ;)

Great links SP.

I’ve been looking into the Unique ways of using wordpress. I need to research some more and do something myself. :P

As for fighting spam plugins, I suggest http://wordpress.org/… or http://wordpress.org/…

btw, your last link still says WordPress 2.2.5 :P

Why does it say March 06? Does it mean 2006 or the day?

lol jk, great links

It’s 06 Shireen. @Milo - I chose not to participate, didn’t know what to predict.

i actually like spamkrama over any other spam addon for wordpress…
it got rid of all my spam, period

Like Shireen, I found the title a tad confusing. I didn’t realise you meant ‘the 6th of March’, perhaps you had bashed your head and thought it was 2006 or something…

Very good roundup!

When I first skimmed this I thought maybe it was coming to the theme club and I was all set to adopt you. ;) Still pretty good though.

I liked the 48 things post so much, I did my own version, but 25 ideas for WPMU. ;)

I just upgrade my wordpress to 2.3.3, and now there is 2.5, it’s too fast moving for me.

Btw, the future of wordpress theme is more blurry between payed theme and free theme.

Thanks for the link back sp glad you found it useful :)

Tyler:

No offensive SP, but WPDesigner has been really lacking in the past few weeks… have you released any new themes for the theme club? Haven’t seen one in awhile.

Give the guy a break he is in the middle of a change in lifestyle and vacation.
